Consulting Profile
- Dave
David Winstanley provides consulting services in engineering and program management focusing on helping companies improve their new product development process. Dave has over forty years of experience working with companies internationally on topics related to project management, product development, and technology development. Dave’s primary focus has been in aerospace as Director of Engineering at Honeywell, a Tier 1 supplier to Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, and other aerospace OEM’s. Dave has also program managed programs with a value of $100M. As a consultant, he specializes in helping companies define and improve their project execution process, specifically for cases when the product or manufacturing technology development must be completed as part of the project execution. Dave helps companies plan and manage development projects and measure their performance by aligning tiered prototyping and technology demonstration to the standard phase-gating process.
David has unique experience in helping organizations to investigate and define root cause and corrective actions to safety issues while maintaining customer relationships and continuing product manufacturing and delivery. Dave also has helped organizations to understand and succeed at achieving certification with governmental regulatory agencies such as the FAA in the U.S. or EASA in Europe.
David has held design authority as Chief Engineer on a wide variety of products including the HTF7000 turbofan engine (currently on 4 different aircraft) as well as integrated mechanical systems (e.g. bleed, ECS, cabin pressure) on commercial and military aircraft. He also has experience in applying these principles in automotive, chemical, and industrial products. He has assured outstanding user acceptance of products by including design for repair and overhaul as part of the products designed.
Dave has specific experience including the following:
- Defining and executing new directions for a large engineering organization by leveraging engineering management to deliver improvements in: Innovation; Design to Cost; Safety Management System; Root Cause Corrective Action.
- Delivering superior results in product safety & engineering design quality across a wide span of mechanical products and systems – 8 sites (US & Europe); 44 direct reports; 15 OEM customers.
- Providing confidence to CTO & senior management via review & approval of program budgets of $1M to $50M.
- Championing the integration of new manufacturing technologies, such as additive manufacturing (DLMS, PAT), metal injection moldling (MIM), and others into program management plans for new product development.
- Defining and executing methodologies for integrating technical oversight into program management for a large organization across multiple sites to provide “integrated systems” to new product development aircraft including Airbus A350 Extended Mechanical Systems Perimeter (EMSP), F35/Joint Strike Fighter – Power & Thermal Management System (PTMS); Gulfstream G280 turbofan engine and cabin environmental systems.
- Designing, developing, and resolving complex technical issues for aircraft pneumatic and controls systems (e.g. bleed air, ECS, ventilation, cabin pressure, etc) within defined program requirements.
- Developing relationships & methods to coordinate multiple engineering and manufacturing sites to present a ‘one company’ face to customers & resolve internecine conflicts (both internal and within customer organizations)
- Successfully certifying, qualifying, and upgrading gas turbine engines for commercial turbofan engines and military land systems propulsion (automotive) including:
- HTF7000/AS907 engine as prime propulsion for: Bombardier CL300; Gulfstream G280; Embraer 450/550;
- AGT1500 engine as prime propulsion for U.S. Army M1A1 Abrams main battle tank;
- TF731 engine as prime propulsion for: Dassault Falcon 900; Gulfstream G150; Bombardier Lear 45; others
Dave received BSME and MSME from Purdue University in 1974 and 1980 respectively.
Dave received the Cliff Garrett Turbomachinery Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers in 2013.
